Is God Three Persons or One?

If you have been a Christian for a while, you have probably heard or sung the following, beloved hymn of the church. Though it is indeed beautiful, and though most of it is indeed Biblical, each verse ends with the words "God in three persons, blessed Trinity."  So, is God three persons, or is He one, singular person?

First, here is the hymn:

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

Let's see what the Bible says. It says,

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD" (Deuteronomy 6:4.)

We will share more on this topic in the future, but let it be remembered that Christianity sprung forth from God's revelation in the Old Testament, in which absolute monotheism was one of the strongest and most emphasized doctrines of God. Therefore true, Biblical Christianity cannot be at variance with the Old Testament.
